Business situation: Create additional sources of evidence that support the usage of our flagship product. Using the Medicare Standard Analytic Files (SAF), determine if our product has better outcomes than standard of care.
The approach: This analysis focused on diabetic patients that had a foot ulcer during a 4-year period between 2015 – 2018. We developed a methodology for creating a diabetic foot ulcer episode of care that was the basis for comparing patients treated with our product v. those that were not. Patients were then statistically matched to ensure that both groups were comparable. Finally, a group of leading wound care physicians and researchers were brought together to write up the findings.
Business outcome: This work was recently published (July 2021): Observed impact of skin substitutes in lower extremity diabetic ulcers: lessons from the Medicare Database (2015-2018) https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34256590/
